According to recent studies and research taking multivitamins for long term may not be do any good for your heart health. There’s not much evidence that supports the claim that multivitamins has the ability to reduce the risk of heart related problems like stroke or attacks. Does it imply that are we are not suppose to depend on multivitamins to support heart health, studies so say, people do not need to take supplements or multivitamins to maintain heart health.

How multivitamins affect heart health?  

  • Researchers say that there is no strong evidence that suggest that taking multivitamins which include various minerals and vitamins and single nutrient supplements like vitamin A,C,D and E, calcium, beta -carotene, iron, zinc, magnesium and selenium does not provide any protection against developing heart diseases with exception of nutrients like folic acid, B vitamins(B6,B12) as they are water soluble, meaning the excess amount of these nutrients which is not needed by the body is excreted and they have the potential to reduce the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.
  • According to studies there is indeed a higher risk of consuming beta-carotene, vitamin A, C and E and these nutrients may cause health problems as these vitamins are fat soluble, that implies if taken in huge amounts can put you at risk of toxicity and heart failure and hemorrhage, that’s why before taking any supplements or vitamins you must consult your physician and know about the risks and benefits of taking these nutrients.

How do you supply multivitamins to your body for good health?

It is very clear for most of us that our bodies need good supply of various vitamins and minerals to carry out normal functions. Studies say taking nutrient supplements may be harmful for your heart and whole body then how are you suppose to feed your body with all the nutrients needed for maintaining heart health, the answer lies in the food choices you make. But try to eat fresh produce as much as possible, because long term consumption of multivitamin is not advisable.

Bottom-line – strong evidence is needed to conclude that taking multivitamins is beneficial or risky, but one thing is clear not all vitamin supplements are useless. The bottom-line is getting your daily dose of nutrients from foods and not pills because a balanced diet will provide your body with not only vitamins and minerals but also fiber, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Apart from eating healthy for your heart health because there is no substitute for a nutritious diet include exercise, and stay away from alcohol and tobacco.
